The Best Of The Best: Drugstore Primers♥

I genuinely do not know how I managed to keep my foundation on my face before using a primer. A primer is applied before foundation in order to help prolong the length of time it stays on your face. There are a huge variety of primers which all offer different things, including some that create a dewy base whilst others fill in pores to create a flawless base. Having oily skin, my primer preference is one that helps fill in any visible pores and helps to keep shine at bay for a long length of time. In my opinion, a good primer means that your foundation applies evenly and looks airbrushed. From lotions to waters, and highend to drugstores, a huge variety of primers are available.

Primark Primer Water || £2 - You may remember me reviewing this product earlier this year (read here) but I had to feature it in my top drugstore primers. Unlike the next few primers, this one isn't a lotion formula, it's actually a water version. You may think that it doesn't help your foundation but trust me, it seriously does. It's magical. A simple few sprays on your face, allow it to dry into your skin and fire ahead with your base makeup. It's quite lightweight too, also not to mention it feels cooling and refreshing on your skin too. For the low price tag, I cannot recommend it enough - Primark's beauty range has stepped up so much lately!

Soap and Glory One Heck Of A Blot Primer || £10 - At one point, I remember seeing this primer everywhere, and it's damn right to be. It's an oily skin's best friend and enemy in one. It has quite a thick formula which helps to fill in any exposed pores, meaning that it will prevent any oily spots from showing through - it's 1 point to you, 0 to your oily skin! Although it is thick, by no means does it clog your pores. Using in conjunction with a pressed powder to set the foundation, my skin looks airbrushed and perfect, and I can last a good few hours before any oily patches appear and need to be topped up with any powder.

Nivea Post Shave Balm || £5.29 (now £2.63) - Rewind to Summer 2016 and everyone and their dog was raving about the post shave balm (even I was - read here). You may be thinking "But how can a man's shaving balm work as a primer?". It works as a primer because it contains the ingredient glycerol, and it's this which makes the balm feel "tacky" and "sticky" when applied to the skin, and allows the makeup to attach. It doesn't sound great, but trust me, it sure is. A small amount is all that's required, and it does have a masculine scent as it is a male product, but I have no objections (it smells very nice indeed!) After your foundation and base products are applied, the scent isn't noticeable at all.

Apart from the Soap and Glory primer, the other primers are all under £10, so if you ask me, they're a bargain buy. They all work well for my oily skin, but I think they would work with any other skin types too. All of the primers limit shininess for a good few hours at a time, and this is definitely what I need!

What are your favourite drugstore primers?

  8. I'm not sure if you've tried the Rimmel Insta spray as well but I've been really liking using that as a priming spray myself, mostly because my local (tiny suburb) Primark is too terrifying to go in so I got that one instead LOL! xoxo

  11. Ooh, I love the look of the Primark primer water! I'm currently using the Smashbox primer water, and this looks like such a good alternative, as the Smashbox one is a little pricey. Great post, really informative!
